Crofton, Residential area in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States
Crofton is a planned residential community in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, situated between Crain Highway, Davidsonville Road, and Defense Highway. The area features single-family homes, parks, schools, and small shopping centers spread throughout its neighborhoods.
In 1963, the Crawford Corporation purchased approximately 1,600 acres to develop Crofton as a planned community, following the model of similar projects like Reston and Columbia. This development transformed the area from rural farmland into a modern suburban residential community.
The name originates from a township in Cumberland County, England, and the community maintains strong connections to its English heritage through local events.
The area is located approximately 10 kilometers from Annapolis, 38 kilometers from Baltimore, and 40 kilometers from Washington D.C., making it easily accessible from these major cities. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable weather for walking around and exploring the community's neighborhoods and parks.
In 2002, the discovery of northern snakehead fish in a local pond captured national attention and sparked extensive management efforts to control this invasive species. This unusual event temporarily put the community in the spotlight of ecological debates.
