Kensington, Historical town in Montgomery County, Maryland
Kensington is a small residential community in Montgomery County, Maryland, covering less than one square kilometer. The town forms a closely connected neighborhood with around 2,100 residents.
Originally called Knowles Station, the community grew from farmland into a suburb after the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad arrived in 1873. The rail connection transformed it into a gateway for accessing the broader region.
The annual Day of the Book Festival draws authors, musicians, and neighbors together to celebrate literature and creative expression. The event reflects how deeply reading and the arts are woven into daily life here.
The community sits directly on the MARC rail line with a central station offering quick connections to Washington, D.C. and beyond. Multiple bus lines also connect the area to other parts of Montgomery County.
The Noyes Library here was the first public library in Montgomery County and still operates from its original Victorian-era building. The structure itself stands as a reminder of a time when learning and community gathering were central priorities.
