Mukwonago, village in Waukesha County, Wisconsin

Mukwonago is a small village in Wisconsin that sits along the Mukwonago River and Lower Phantom Lake. The village covers about eight square miles with gently rolling landscape, green spaces, and a network of lakes and waterways that shape the terrain.

The area was originally home to the Potawatomi tribe, whose name endured in the village. In 1844 the spelling was changed to resemble the nearby town of Mequon, marking a shift in the village's early development and how settlers shaped its identity.

The name Mukwonago comes from the Potawatomi language and means bear's den. The village honors this connection to its indigenous past through street names that remember early settlers and through local stories about the Potawatomi bear clan who once lived in these lands.

The village is situated by lakes and rivers that support fishing, boating, and walking along waterways for outdoor recreation. The community provides local schools and services, with a village website offering information to help new visitors and residents navigate the area.

The village borders Vernon Marsh, a large wetland that surrounds the two Phantom Lakes and plays an important role in the local ecosystem. The Mukwonago River flows between these lakes, connecting them to the Fox River further south, creating an interconnected water landscape.
