Superman – Ride of Steel, Steel roller coaster at Six Flags America, US
Superman – Ride of Steel is a steel roller coaster at Six Flags America in Maryland, running along a red track. The structure rises about 63 meters (208 feet), plunges down approximately 62 meters (205 feet), and accelerates to speeds of 117 kilometers per hour (73 miles per hour).
The roller coaster opened in 2000 as one of the first major installations to feature the Superman theme in its concept. Manufacturer Intamin built the track, which later received upgraded safety systems.
The name honors the comic hero, and the ride simulates the feeling of flying through steep drops and rapid climbs. The open-sided trains let riders' legs dangle freely, making the sensation of soaring through air even more intense.
Riders must be at least 132 centimeters (52 inches) tall and are secured with a lap bar and seat belt, not with shoulder restraints. The open seating offers clear views in all directions but requires a firm grip during the ride.
The track runs about 1,650 meters across the park grounds and features several hills that create moments of weightlessness. An overbanked double helix spirals the cars through tight turns before they enter the brake run.
