Convent of the Sacred Heart, Catholic school in Manhattan, United States.
The institution operates within a historic mansion on East 91st Street, showing elegant early twentieth-century architecture through its ornate facade and tall windows. Inside, classrooms, a library, and several chapels occupy five floors.
The religious community opened this school for girls in 1881 and moved into the grand townhouse only later, after it was completed in 1905. The building originally served as the private residence of a wealthy New York industrialist.
The school takes its name from the Catholic devotion that remains visible in chapels and religious symbols throughout the building today. Students attend services and spiritual activities that form part of daily life on campus.
Visitors can view the exterior facade from the street, as the building continues to operate as a school. The entrance sits right on Museum Mile, making it easy to spot during a walk through the Upper East Side.
The original ballroom of the mansion now serves as the school chapel and retains the richly decorated ceiling and intricate wood paneling from around 1905. The marble staircase that once led guests to the upper reception area is now used by students heading to class.
