Hibbing is a city in St. Louis County in northern Minnesota that covers around 186 square miles and sits roughly 1,490 feet (455 meters) above sea level. The settlement comprises an older core and a later downtown built a few miles to the west.
Frank Hibbing founded the settlement in 1893 after iron ore discoveries in the Mesabi Range became known. Mining activity in the following decades required the relocation of large parts of the original townsite to the west.
Visitors walk along Bob Dylan Drive and see markers of the musician's childhood years before he became famous around the world. His birthplace and other locations from his youth remain visible in the streetscape and draw fans from many countries.
Visitors can follow the historic relocation by tracing markers between the old townsite and the present downtown area. Public viewpoints offer views over the surrounding mining areas and help with orientation across the wide city limits.
The Hull-Rust-Mahoning Mine at the city edge ranks as the largest open-pit iron ore operation worldwide and stretches several miles in length. Its dimensions exceed those of many other extraction sites and continue to shape the regional landscape.
