Kirksville, County seat in northeastern Missouri, United States.
Kirksville is the county seat of Adair County in northeastern Missouri, located roughly 90 miles north of Columbia near the Chariton River. The city sits at an elevation of about 300 meters and serves as the administrative center for the county.
The city was founded in 1841 and named after Jesse Kirk, who served as the first postmaster. A significant Civil War battle took place here in 1862 when Union forces defeated Confederate troops in the area.
Three universities shape daily life here: Truman State University, Moberly Area Community College, and A.T. Still University of Health Sciences. These institutions bring a student-focused atmosphere with regular campus events and activities throughout the year.
Kirk-Tran operates a public transportation system serving the city, while Kirksville Regional Airport provides air connections to larger hubs. Visitors can plan around these transport options to explore the area efficiently.
The city was home to America's first osteopathic medical college, founded in 1892, which shaped the history of medical education in the country. This pioneering institution established the city as a center for osteopathic medicine.
