McFarland, Agricultural community in Kern County, US
McFarland is a town in Kern County, United States, located along Highway 99 in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The community spreads over roughly seven square kilometers (about 2.7 square miles) at an elevation just above one hundred meters (around 350 feet).
James Boyd McFarland purchased farmland and founded the settlement in 1909. In July 1957 the community gained official status as an incorporated city.
The town takes its name from founder James Boyd McFarland, an early twentieth-century landowner. Today churches of several denominations and Spanish-language businesses shape the streetscape of the community.
City Hall on West Kern Street opens Monday through Thursday during standard office hours. Visitors exploring the area should plan to drive, as public transport options remain limited.
Cotton, sugar beets and potatoes grow in the surrounding fields, while rose farming provides another source of income. Citrus processing plants and almond hulling facilities also operate within the community.
