Crosby, Census-designated place in Harris County, Texas, United States
Crosby is a census-designated place in eastern Harris County with residential neighborhoods mixed with local commercial areas. The community sits on relatively flat terrain and remains primarily a bedroom community for the greater Houston region.
The settlement started in 1823 when Humphrey Jackson established a camp called Lick Skillet, named after the springs where oxen teams rested during their journeys. Over time it evolved into a residential community on the outskirts of the Houston area.
The community maintains strong Texas traditions through regular events at local venues, connecting residents through shared activities and celebrations throughout the year.
The area is best explored by car since it is a sprawling residential community without extensive public transportation options. Visitors should plan to drive through the neighborhoods and think of the place as a transit zone between Houston and areas to the east.
In December 1953, the community briefly adopted the name Hope, Texas while entering a naming contest organized by comedian Bob Hope. This temporary change reflects a moment when the town sought attention through a lighthearted promotional effort.
