Southfield covers 67 square kilometers (26 square miles) in the Detroit metropolitan area and serves as a major business center in southeastern Michigan. The city maintains more than 300 hectares (800 acres) of parks alongside numerous office complexes that shape its skyline.
John Daniels settled in this area in 1823, when it was known as Ossewa Township. The community gained official city status on April 28, 1958, and subsequently grew into a regional business center.
Over 27 million square feet of office space houses international corporations, including Veoneer, Denso, and Federal-Mogul, making it a regional economic center.
Several colleges and universities operate throughout the area, along with public schools serving the community. Main roads and highways provide access to different neighborhoods and neighboring municipalities.
