Oakland County is a territorial division in southeastern Michigan that brings together 62 separate municipalities ranging from small villages to larger cities across its borders. Pontiac serves as the administrative center where county offices and courts handle legal matters for residents throughout the area.
The area received its administrative status in March 1820 during the early settlement period of the Michigan Territory by American pioneers. The original layout followed the federal land survey system with rectangular townships organized according to national planning standards.
Oakland County maintains numerous parks and educational facilities, including Oakland University, which extends between Auburn Hills and Rochester Hills.
Several interstate routes cross through the region linking the different communities to each other and to neighboring areas in all directions. Navigation generally follows the standard grid pattern with north-south and east-west main roads running through individual towns.
According to the 2020 Census, Oakland County ranks as Michigan's second most populous county with 1,274,395 residents and maintains high educational achievement rates.
