Highland Township, Charter township in Oakland County, Michigan, US
Highland Township is a charter township in Oakland County that covers land with numerous lakes and recreational areas scattered throughout. The M-59 highway runs through the area, serving as a main route connecting different parts of the township.
Pioneer families began settling the area from 1835 onward and established the first communities. Railroads later came through and helped drive economic growth by making timber transport and trade possible.
The six communities within this township—Clyde, East Highland, Hickory Ridge, Highland, Seven Harbors, and West Highland—each maintain their own character and serve as gathering points for residents. Today, visitors can see how these separate settlements create distinct neighborhoods throughout the broader area.
The area offers easy access to lakes and recreation areas for outdoor activities and nature enjoyment. The M-59 highway provides convenient connections to nearby urban areas to the east and to US-23 in the west.
In 2003, the township received official recognition from Michigan as the first designated equestrian area in the state. This status reflects the strong horse and riding culture that exists throughout the community.
