Highland Recreation Area

Highland Recreation Area is a protected woodland spanning 6000 acres across rolling hills with ten inland lakes and designated swimming beaches. The property features more than 70 kilometers of hiking trails that connect through various landscape types.

The land began as a private retreat owned by automotive industrialist Edsel Ford before being designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1976. This conversion to public access opened the space to visitors from the region.

The area reflects the natural forest diversity of southern Michigan, with visitors able to experience different woodland types during their explorations. This variety makes each trail through the region feel distinct from the others.

A Recreation Passport is required to access facilities including picnic areas, flying fields, and dog training zones. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the trails pass through rolling terrain.

The Haven Hill section was designed by landscape architect Jens Jensen, who blended natural features with planned recreational layouts. This early approach to nature-based design remains visible in the trails and open spaces.
