Parashakthi Temple, Hindu temple in Pontiac, Michigan, United States
Parashakthi Temple is a Hindu temple in Pontiac, Michigan, dedicated to the goddess Parashakthi and housing several shrines for different deities. The complex also has a large communal dining hall and ceremonial spaces arranged according to South Indian temple tradition.
The temple was founded in 1999 by Swami Paramananda Saraswathi, who chose the site in Michigan with the intention of bringing South Indian temple worship to the region. The inauguration ceremonies were held on a date selected for its religious meaning, drawing visitors from across the country.
The temple is built in the South Indian style, with hand-carved stone brought from India and assembled on site by artisans trained in traditional methods. Inside, daily rituals follow the rules of Agama Shastra, a classical system that governs how ceremonies are conducted in temples of this tradition.
Morning and evening prayer times are the most active periods, when ceremonies are in full swing and the congregation gathers. If you prefer a quieter visit, midday hours tend to be calmer, and removing shoes before entering shrine areas is required.
The temple's tower, called a gopuram, was built by stone carvers who traveled from India specifically for the project, since this craft is rarely practiced in the United States. The technique used to carve the figures follows rules passed down through families in Tamil Nadu for many generations.
