Franklin Boulevard Historic District
Franklin Boulevard Historic District, Historic residential district in Pontiac, United States
The Franklin Boulevard Historic District stretches along Franklin Boulevard between West Huron Street and Orchard Lake Avenue with spacious single-family homes that maintain consistent setbacks from the street. Additional buildings in the area sit along Mary Day and Henry Clay Avenues between Franklin and Miller Streets, extending toward Williams Street.
The Sibley-Hoyt House at 146 West Lawrence Street, built in 1819, is the oldest building in the district. After that, the area developed into a wealthy residential neighborhood for Pontiac's leading families.
The Pontiac Cultural Arts Center, originally built as the city library in 1898, continues to shape cultural life in the neighborhood. The building shows how the community valued arts and learning from an early time.
The district is best explored on foot and is pleasant to walk through at any time of year. It is worth taking your time to observe the architectural details and green spaces on both sides of the streets.
The O.J. Beaudette House from 1914 reflects the shift from carriage building to automobile production in Pontiac's industry. The house shows how the city's wealthiest residents benefited from this industrial change and invested their new wealth in grand homes.
