Steubenville

Steubenville is a city on the east bank of the Ohio River in Jefferson County, Ohio.Streets run parallel to the water and climb up wooded hills behind the historic core.

The settlement grew after 1786 around a military post built to protect surveyors mapping the Northwest Territory.The community received its charter in 1797 and expanded with iron and steel industries during the 19th century.

Murals cover building facades throughout downtown showing scenes from different eras of local heritage and trade.Art workshops and gallery spaces occupy old commercial buildings that once housed river merchants and craftsmen.

Visitors can walk through the downtown area where most murals and historic buildings stand within a few blocks of each other.The riverfront promenade offers views across the water toward the West Virginia shoreline and connects several public parks.

Life-size nutcracker figures stand throughout Fort Steuben Park each winter transforming the green space into a storybook landscape.The collection grows each year and draws visitors from neighboring states who walk among the sculptures taking photographs.
