East Orange, Urban center in Essex County, New Jersey.
East Orange is a city in Essex County, New Jersey, with residential neighborhoods linked by tree-lined streets. The built environment mixes low-rise rowhouses, detached homes, and multistory apartment blocks.
The city formed in 1863 from portions of Newark, previously known as Newark Mountains. During the 20th century, many African American families moved here and transformed the social makeup of the community.
The name comes from the neighboring Orange communities, all named after William III of Orange. Churches, small shops, and barbershops line the main streets and shape the daily rhythm of local life.
Two New Jersey Transit stations and several bus lines provide connections to New York City and the region. Pedestrians move most easily along the main streets, which generally have sidewalks.
Paul Robeson Stadium honors the singer, actor, and activist born in Princeton who remained closely tied to New Jersey throughout his life. The venue now serves as a gathering point for sports events and community celebrations.
