Cold Spring, Historic village in Putnam County, United States

Cold Spring sits on the eastern bank of the Hudson River with views of West Point Military Academy across the water. The village is defined by 19th-century structures that recall its former role as a manufacturing center for weapons production.

The village developed around an early 19th-century foundry that grew into a major employer, especially during the Civil War. Proximity to the river enabled transport of manufactured cannons by water to New York.

The village displays its industrial past through 19th-century buildings that housed workers and business owners in distinct architectural styles. Walking through the historic district reveals how the physical layout once separated different social classes of the manufacturing community.

The village is easily reached by train, with regular service connecting to Grand Central Terminal in New York City in about one hour. The riverbank location makes for pleasant walking and exploring, with good views of the Hudson River from several spots.

The village sits at the deepest point of the Hudson River, where Dutch settlers once discovered a spring that produced cold water throughout the year. This water source gave the place its name and shaped its early identity long before industry arrived.
