Bushkill Falls

Bushkill Falls is a series of eight waterfalls in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. The tallest drop measures about 100 feet (30 meters), while the others flow over rock ledges and mossy outcrops that can be seen from hiking trails.

The Peters family opened the waterfalls to visitors in 1904 and gradually built a network of wooden walkways through the gorge. Over the following decades more trails were added, connecting all eight falls today.

The name comes from the Dutch word for stream and recalls early settlers from the Netherlands who lived in this valley. Today visitors follow wooden walkways that wind between hemlock trees and open onto views of several waterfalls.

Access follows marked trails of varying difficulty, from a short loop to longer hikes through the gorge. Sturdy footwear is advisable, as the wooden walkways can become slippery when wet.

Two separate streams, Little Bush Kill and Pond Run Creek, feed the eight falls before flowing onward toward the Delaware River. In the 19th century Swiss artist Adolfo Müller-Ury painted the main fall on a large canvas now displayed in Germany.
