Ocean City

Ocean City is a coastal town in Cape May County, New Jersey, that runs along several miles of Atlantic shoreline. The town includes wide sandy beaches, a wooden boardwalk with entertainment areas, and residential neighborhoods that extend from the shore inland.

The town was founded in 1879 as a religious retreat and gained borough status in 1884. Methodist clergy shaped its growth as an alcohol-free resort that retains this character today.

The boardwalk keeps its family character with arcades and carousels that have drawn visitors for generations. Many restaurants serve local seafood and treats enjoyed during walks along the shore.

Lifeguards patrol the beaches during summer months, and visitors need beach access tags for this period. The boardwalk remains open for walking year round, though many shops and attractions close outside the season.

The town has banned alcohol sales within its borders since its founding. The Tabernacle still hosts weekly summer events that trace back to the religious roots of the place.
