Nelsonville

Nelsonville is a city in northwestern Athens County, Ohio, surrounded by forested areas and home to several educational and business facilities. The area includes Hocking College and other local institutions that shape community life.

Daniel Nelson founded this settlement in 1814, and it grew into an incorporated city by 1838 through coal, clay, and salt extraction. Resource extraction was the driving force behind the town's growth and early economic development.

Stuart's Opera House from 1879 remains the only working second-story opera house in Ohio and hosts over 75 events each year. The building shapes the town's character and draws people who want to experience live music and theater.

The Hockhocking Adena Bikeway connects several locations in the region and provides paths for cyclists and walkers to explore. The routes are accessible for different fitness levels and allow visitors to discover the area at a relaxed pace.

In 1888 the city became the first municipality west of the Allegheny Mountains to electrify its entire street lighting. This achievement shows an early commitment to modern infrastructure and innovation in the region.
