Second Street Bridge, Historic truss bridge in Allegan, United States.
Second Street Bridge is a steel truss structure that crosses the Kalamazoo River in Allegan. The span uses solid granite supports and metal railings to safely guide traffic across the waterway.
The King Iron Bridge Company built this span in 1886 using a steel truss design to replace an unsafe wooden crossing. This type of metal construction proved more durable than the earlier wooden structure it succeeded.
The bridge earned recognition through multiple designations, including the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and Michigan State Historic Site in 1982.
Traffic lights manage the flow on this single-lane bridge to prevent collisions between vehicles heading in opposite directions. Pedestrians and cyclists can also use the crossing and have access to the metal railings.
Since 1995 this crossing has appeared in Allegan's official city logo, symbolizing the link between old and new engineering approaches. The image shows how deeply the structure shapes the town's identity.
