Lakewood Township, Administrative township in Ocean County, New Jersey.
Lakewood Township is a municipality in Ocean County, New Jersey, stretching across roughly 25 square miles (65 square kilometers) and containing four artificial lakes. The area includes residential neighborhoods of varying density, commercial zones along main roads, and parks around the water bodies.
The township was officially established in 1892, after sawmill operations had existed in the region since around 1750. During the 20th century it grew into the most populated municipality in Ocean County.
Beth Medrash Govoha, opened in 1943, turned this place into a center of Jewish learning that draws students from across North America. Today the synagogues and schools of the Orthodox community shape everyday life in many neighborhoods and set the rhythm of the town.
The township is part of an Urban Enterprise Zone, which allows participating retailers to charge reduced sales tax. This makes shopping in certain stores less expensive than in many other parts of the state.
ShoreTown Ballpark sits within the township and serves as home to the Jersey Shore BlueClaws, a minor league baseball team. Outside baseball season, local groups use the stadium for sporting events and community gatherings.
