Georgian Court University, Private Catholic university in Lakewood, New Jersey
Georgian Court University is a Catholic college in Lakewood Township, New Jersey, set on a former estate with historic buildings and landscaped gardens. The campus spreads across about 156 acres (63 hectares) with brick facades in the Georgian style and paths that wind through sections of woodland.
The grounds were originally the country estate of a wealthy businessman from the early 20th century and passed to the Sisters of Mercy in 1924, who turned it into a women's college. The institution gradually opened and began accepting male students from 2013, becoming a comprehensive university.
Inside the university grounds, the Italian Garden still keeps the name from when the estate was built as a private residence. Students and visitors walk between fountains and sculptures, using the quiet space between classes.
The college welcomes visitors, though some areas can only be entered during events or by arrangement. Those exploring the gardens and grounds should wear sturdy footwear, as some paths run through wooded sections.
The original owner had a Japanese Garden built on the estate that is still visible today and is considered one of the oldest of its kind on the East Coast. Between the ponds and bridges grow plants imported from Japan over a century ago.
