Hangar No. 1, Lakehurst Naval Air Station, Steel airship hangar in Lakehurst, United States.
Hangar No. 1 is a massive steel structure built to shelter airships at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey. The interior space is enormous, designed to accommodate the largest zeppelins and other lighter-than-air aircraft without obstacles.
The structure was built in 1921 by the US Navy to serve as the center for airship operations on the East Coast. It became recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1968 for its role in aviation history.
The East Coast Indoor Modelers club conducts national championships and record-setting flights within this massive indoor facility since 1926.
Access to the hangar is restricted because it sits within an active military installation that requires security clearance. Visitors should plan ahead and contact the facility to arrange permission and bring valid identification for entry.
The hangar's two main doors are each several hundred tons and slide open along railroad-style tracks that run across the floor. These massive doors require powerful motors to operate and remain one of the building's most striking features.
