Cathedral of the Air

The Cathedral of the Air is a military chapel in Manchester Township built with Norman-Gothic architecture. The building features high ceilings and decorated stained glass windows that depict moments from aviation history.

The chapel was built in 1932 near Lakehurst Naval Air Station during a period of expanding aviation technology. It contains memorials for two naval airships that were lost in accidents.

The building serves as a gathering place for military personnel to hold ceremonies and remembrance events that welcome all faiths. Its non-denominational design reflects the idea that people of different beliefs can share moments of reflection together.

The space accommodates about 240 people and is wheelchair accessible, allowing visitors with mobility concerns to attend services easily. Visitors should keep in mind that this building is primarily used for ceremonies and formal occasions.

The eighteen stained glass windows tell a story of flight that ranges from mythological figures like Pegasus to modern aircraft. One special window even shows the visit of the Graf Zeppelin airship to Lakehurst, a historical moment many visitors overlook.
