Ocean County

Ocean County is an administrative division in the state of New Jersey along the Atlantic coast, combining flat terrain with pine forests, salt marshes, and long sandy beaches. The region stretches from the shoreline inland and includes both densely developed shore towns and quieter residential neighborhoods farther from the water.

The administrative division was created in 1850 by separating portions from Monmouth County to the north. A small section from Burlington County was later added to form the present boundaries.

The name comes from the Atlantic Ocean, which forms the eastern boundary and shapes life in the coastal towns. During warm months the beaches draw families and day visitors who relax on the sand and swim in the water.

Access comes through several highways running from Philadelphia and New York City, or by public buses and trains that serve different towns. During summer the shore communities get crowded, while inland areas remain quieter year-round.

This region holds a major amusement park with roller coasters and rides, among the best known of its kind on the East Coast. Several beach resorts draw hundreds of thousands of visitors each summer, who explore boardwalks lined with arcades and food stands.
