Toms River, County seat township in Ocean County, New Jersey, US
Toms River is a county seat municipality in Ocean County, New Jersey, combining residential areas, shopping zones, and waterways along the coast. The municipality extends across several locations with beaches, parks, and access to Barnegat Bay.
The settlement was founded in 1768 and developed as a center for shipbuilding and fishing along the New Jersey coast. The location grew during the 19th and 20th centuries with the expansion of railroad connections and coastal development.
The neighborhood preserves its maritime roots through the river that winds through the municipality and lends it its name. The harbor and surrounding waterways see recreational boaters traveling between marinas and local restaurants during summer weekends.
The main business district runs along major roads where restaurants, banks, and public facilities are located. Beach sections are accessible via several approach roads, with parking near the shore filling quickly during summer months.
A local youth baseball team won the international championship in 1998 and was celebrated across the country. The players returned to a reception that brought thousands of residents into the streets.
