The stadium opened in 1902 for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and served as the main venue for the 1904 Summer Olympics, the first Games outside Europe.
The stadium honors David Rowland Francis, former Missouri governor who brought the 1904 Olympics to St. Louis during the Louisiana Purchase celebration.
Located on the western part of Washington University's Danforth Campus, the field currently hosts university track, football, soccer, and cross country events.
The adjacent Francis Gymnasium has hosted four United States presidential debates, making this sports complex a center for both athletics and national politics.
