Jewel Box, Art Deco greenhouse in Forest Park, St. Louis
The Jewel Box features cantilevered vertical glass walls rising 50 feet high, with over 16,664 square feet of plate glass supported by steel beams.
Built in 1936 under Mayor Bernard Dickmann's leadership, the greenhouse project received 45 percent of its $117,000 construction cost from Public Works Administration grants.
The Flora Conservancy of Forest Park partners with the St. Louis Parks Division to maintain seasonal flower displays and permanent botanical collections throughout the year.
Visitors can access the greenhouse Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with admission costing $1 per person except for free entry on Monday and Tuesday mornings.
The structure employs five stepped, composition-covered wood roofs with clerestories instead of a traditional glass ceiling to prevent damage from frequent hailstorms.
