Tivoli Theatre, Movie theater in Delmar Loop, University City, US
The Tivoli Theatre is a movie theater on Delmar Boulevard in the Delmar Loop area of University City, Missouri, built in the Spanish Mission architectural style with a vaulted interior ceiling rising about 40 feet (12 meters). It sits in the middle of a busy commercial strip lined with shops and restaurants on either side.
The theater opened in 1924 when streetcars still ran along Delmar Boulevard, making it a natural gathering point for the neighborhood. It later closed for a period and then went through a major restoration that brought it back to use while keeping its original character.
The Tivoli shows independent films, documentaries, and foreign language productions that rarely appear in standard multiplex cinemas. The audience tends to be a mixed crowd drawn from across the neighborhood, giving screenings a communal feel.
The theater sits in the heart of Delmar Loop, which is easy to walk through and has plenty of food and shopping options nearby. Since the building also serves as a worship space, it is worth checking screening times in advance before making the trip.
Since 2021 the building has belonged to a local congregation that uses it for worship most days of the week, while film screenings take place on Fridays. This shared rhythm makes it one of the few places in the area where cinema and religious practice share the same room.
