Mechanicsburg, Borough community in Cumberland County, United States.
Mechanicsburg is a borough in Cumberland County in south-central Pennsylvania, roughly 10 miles (16 kilometers) west of Harrisburg. The center consists of a few main streets with older commercial buildings, and behind them lie residential neighborhoods with single-family homes and smaller parks.
The settlement formed at the start of the nineteenth century as a stopping point for westward travelers, where craftsmen built and repaired wagons. By mid-century the railroad reached the town and linked it to the large cities in the Northeast.
The main square displays a mix of brick facades and ornamental cornices that recall early Pennsylvania workshops and trading posts. Many buildings now house small shops and cafes that preserve the original settler architectural character.
Most streets follow a grid pattern that makes orientation straightforward. Many public facilities and shops sit along the two main axes in the middle of the settlement.
In summer 1863 Confederate troops moved through the town and seized supplies before withdrawing northward. This episode was one of the few direct military events in the region during the Civil War.
