Johannes Eberly House
Johannes Eberly House, Historic residence in Hampden Township, United States.
The Johannes Eberly House is a 2.5-story fieldstone residence with a gable roof and four bays along U.S. Route 11. The property spans about half an acre of land northeast of Mechanicsburg in Cumberland County.
The structure was built between 1794 and 1798 by Martin Rupp during the early years of American settlement in this region. It later became the site of the Skirmish of Sporting Hill during the American Civil War.
The house displays a blend of Dutch-German and English building techniques that reflect how different European construction traditions came together in this region. Local residents would have recognized these familiar architectural styles in their community.
The house sits directly along a major highway and is easy to locate when traveling Route 11. The flat terrain and clear visibility from the road make it accessible for visitors to approach.
This property marks the northernmost point where Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia engaged in combat during the entire Civil War. This geographic boundary reveals how far southern forces could advance in their campaigns.
