Founded in 1849 as Summit Tunnel, the borough received its current name in 1873 to honor Prince Demetrius Augustine Gallitzin, who established nearby Loretto.
The railroad heritage remains central to local identity through the Gallitzin Tunnels, which exemplify 19th-century engineering across the Allegheny Front.
