Skyliner, Wooden roller coaster in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
The Skyliner is a wooden roller coaster at Lakemont Park in Altoona, Pennsylvania, built from traditional timber framing and rising to about 18 meters at its highest point. The track runs for around 730 meters and carries up to 18 riders at a time through a series of turns and drops.
The Skyliner was designed in 1960 by John C. Allen and first installed at Roseland Park in New York. In 1987 it was moved to Lakemont Park in Pennsylvania, where it has run ever since.
The cars of the Skyliner are painted in the colors of the Altoona Curve, the local minor league baseball team, making the connection between the park and regional sports visible to every rider. It is one of those small details that gives the ride a local identity you would not expect on a roller coaster.
The Skyliner is located inside Lakemont Park, so a visit requires park entry, and it is worth checking weather conditions beforehand since rain or wind can lead to temporary closures. Going early in the day or later in the afternoon generally means shorter lines.
The Skyliner holds the title of ACE Coaster Classic, an award given by the American Coaster Enthusiasts to wooden coasters that have kept their original design largely intact. This means the ride today feels close to what riders experienced in the years just after it was built.
