Greater Boston, Metropolitan area in Massachusetts, United States.

Greater Boston stretches across eastern Massachusetts and the southern portion of New Hampshire, covering several counties that contain cities like Boston, Cambridge, and Newton. The region forms a dense web of residential neighborhoods, commercial districts, and parks connected by broad boulevards and smaller side streets.

The region was a setting for the American Revolution, where events like the Boston Tea Party and battles at Lexington and Concord took place. During the 19th century, the area grew into a center of industry and immigration, attracting families from Ireland, Italy, and other countries.

Students from around the world shape the streetscape, especially in Cambridge and along Commonwealth Avenue, where cafés and bookshops stay open late. On weekends, families flock to baseball games at Fenway Park and gather afterward in the Italian restaurants of North End.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority system connects the entire metropolitan region with subways, buses, and commuter trains that reach smaller towns outside the center. Many neighborhoods can be explored on foot, and bicycle paths run along the Charles River and through residential areas.

The region hosts more than 100 colleges and universities, making it one of the densest academic areas in the world. Along the Red Line between Harvard Square and Kendall Square, laboratories and startups cluster together, often emerging directly from research projects.
