Springfield Armory, National Historic Site in Springfield, Massachusetts, United States.
Springfield Armory is a former federal weapons factory located on a hillside campus in Massachusetts with buildings designed in Greek Revival style. Inside the main hall thousands of firearms trace the evolution of military craftsmanship and the technical experiments carried out here across nearly two centuries.
The compound began during the Revolutionary War as a storage depot for weapons and ammunition and later became the leading production site for American military rifles. After nearly two centuries of operation the factory closed and reopened as a public museum.
The site functioned as a town within a town for over a century with its own fire brigade, library, and even a bowling alley for workers. The families of skilled craftsmen lived in houses on the grounds and formed a community that merged work, research, and everyday life.
The exhibition is spread across several rooms and a full visit typically takes one to two hours depending on your interest in technical details. Visitors can explore the halls on their own or join guided tours that provide background on the production methods and the people who worked here.
The workshops here produced the first American firearms with interchangeable parts, an innovation that later transformed manufacturing worldwide. A gunsmith could replace a broken component with a new one without having to custom-fit the entire rifle.
