Disaster Transport, Indoor steel bobsled roller coaster at Cedar Point, United States

Description

Disaster Transport was an enclosed steel bobsled coaster at Cedar Point that guided guests along a curving 1,932-foot track through a darkened environment. The ride reached heights of 63 feet and traveled at speeds up to 40 miles per hour inside the structure.

History

The coaster opened in 1985 as Avalanche Run, an outdoor attraction that operated in the open air for five years. In 1990, the site was fully enclosed and reimagined as Disaster Transport with a new theme after a renovation.

Culture

The space-themed experience placed riders in the role of cargo delivery personnel traveling from a manufacturing facility to a station in Alaska.

Practical

The enclosed building allowed the ride to operate in all weather conditions throughout the season. Trains accommodated up to ten passengers per vehicle, with seats arranged to handle steady boarding during operating hours.

Did you know?

The attraction stood next to a parking area and appeared as a large gray box rising above the landscape, earning the nickname Cheese Wedge among park visitors. It closed in 2012 after more than two decades of operation to make room for a new coaster installation.
