Fort Montgomery, Revolutionary War fort in Highlands, United States.
Fort Montgomery is a Revolutionary War fort in the Highlands located on a rocky cliff overlooking the Hudson River. The ruins still show remnants of ramparts and defensive positions that once guarded the river.
The Continental Army built this fort in 1776 to protect the Hudson River during the Revolution. British forces captured it in October 1777, gaining control of this important river passage.
The visitor center displays weapons and uniforms from the Revolutionary War era, including a model showing how the fort looked at that time. These items help visitors understand the lives of the soldiers who were stationed here.
Visitors can walk marked trails through the site to explore the archaeological remains, with signs explaining the different areas. The visit works best in good weather, as the ground is uneven and some areas are exposed to the elements.
In 1776, engineers strung a chain across the Hudson River from this fort to stop British ships from sailing upstream. This floating barrier was one of the few attempts to control river traffic during the war.
