Ferris State University, Public university in Big Rapids, United States.
Ferris State University is a public university in Big Rapids in central Michigan with an 880-acre (356-hectare) campus and 115 buildings for teaching, administration, and student housing. The campus includes eight colleges ranging from the College of Arts and Sciences to the College of Pharmacy, as well as sports facilities and research centers.
Woodbridge Nathan Ferris opened the Big Rapids Industrial School in 1884 as a private institution for vocational and technical training. Michigan took over the school in 1950 and transformed it into a state university, which later added branch locations and graduate programs.
The name honors Woodbridge Nathan Ferris, who also served as Michigan governor and founded the school to teach practical trades. Today students use the library in the Timme Center and the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia, which educates visitors about historical discrimination.
Visitors can explore the campus freely, with parking available near most buildings and walking paths connecting all areas. Information about events and public lectures can be found on the university website, and guided tours can be arranged for those interested.
The hockey Bulldogs compete in NCAA Division I, while all other athletic teams participate in Division II. The Ewigloh Ice Center on campus serves as home arena for the hockey team and can seat more than 2,500 spectators.
