Albany International Airport, International airport in Colonie, United States
Albany International Airport is an international airport in Colonie, New York, serving the northeastern United States. It includes multiple runways, a terminal building with food outlets and retail stores, and connected parking structures with pedestrian bridges.
The airport opened in 1908 on a former polo field and is recognized as the first municipal airport in the United States. Glenn Curtiss completed the first sustained flight between Albany and New York City there in 1910.
The airport received its name in honor of Quentin Roosevelt, the son of President Theodore Roosevelt, who served as a fighter pilot during World War I.
The terminal building offers charging stations, seating areas, and facilities for travelers waiting for flights or arriving. A covered pedestrian bridge connects the terminal directly to the parking garages and provides shelter during bad weather.
Glenn Curtiss won a prize of 10,000 dollars there in 1910 for the first successful flight from Albany to New York City. This flight marked an important milestone in early American aviation history.
