Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Military training facility in Onslow County, United States.
Camp Lejeune is a Marine Corps training facility covering around 630 square kilometers (244 square miles) in Onslow County. The installation features 18 kilometers (11 miles) of Atlantic coastline and dozens of firing ranges for infantry and artillery exercises.
The base began operations in 1941 as Marine Barracks New River. One year later it was renamed after John A. Lejeune, the 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps.
The Montford Point Museum on base commemorates the African American Marines who trained here between 1942 and 1949. Visitors can view exhibits and documents that record this chapter of military integration.
Access for civilian visitors is restricted and requires prior clearance through base security authorities. During hurricane season from June through November, special precautions apply and access may be further limited.
The base supports over 170,000 people including active duty personnel, civilian employees, family members and retirees. Its economic contribution to the region is estimated at several billion dollars each year.
