Sparta, city in and county seat of Monroe County, Wisconsin, United States
Sparta is a city in Monroe County, Wisconsin, known as a hub for cycling and outdoor activities. The city features two major designated bike trails, including the famous Elroy-Sparta State Trail with historic railroad tunnels, plus a distinctive large cyclist statue and several cultural sites like the Deke Slayton Space & Bicycle Museum.
The original territory was home to the Ho-Chunk people before European settlers arrived in the early 1850s and established themselves near a crossroads. The town became the county seat in 1854 and later developed into a manufacturing center through railroad connections and water-powered mills.
The name comes from the ancient Greek city-state, given by the mother of the first settlers who arrived in the area. The downtown has a four-corners layout with historic buildings that shape daily life for both visitors and residents.
The city is easily reached via Interstate 90 and offers regional buses plus a small airport for private flights. Visitors should note that the best time for cycling is during the warmer months when trails and parks are fully accessible.
In 1967 an old railroad route became the country's first rail-trail, the Elroy-Sparta State Trail spanning over 32 kilometers and passing through historic railroad tunnels. This conversion of a former transportation corridor into a popular recreational destination pioneered a model for similar projects nationwide.
