Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Military hospital in Shepherd Park, Washington D.C.
The Walter Reed Army Medical Center was a former military hospital in the Shepherd Park neighborhood of the nation's capital. The complex covered 28 acres of interior space and contained 5,500 rooms that housed numerous treatment and administrative areas.
The facility opened in 1909 and grew from 80 to 2,500 beds during World War I to treat wounded soldiers. The hospital remained in operation for over a century before closing in 2011 and transferring its functions to other locations.
The facility earned recognition on the National Register of Historic Places for its contributions to military medicine and service to American armed forces personnel.
The site served over 150,000 active and retired military personnel from different branches of the American armed forces. The facility closed in 2011, and patients were transferred to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda.
The namesake Walter Reed led research on yellow fever transmission through mosquitoes long before the hospital was built. His scientific legacy became intertwined with the facility's reputation as a site of advanced medical care for military personnel.
