Furman University, Private constituent college in Travelers Rest, US
Furman University is a private liberal arts college in Greenville, South Carolina. The campus covers 750 acres (303 hectares) with classroom buildings, residence halls, and athletic facilities arranged around forested grounds and a large lake.
The college was established in 1826 as Furman Academy and Theological Institution, starting with ten students. It moved to its current location outside downtown in 1958 and later separated from theological training.
The university maintains 167 student organizations and emphasizes liberal arts education through programs in 42 subjects across multiple academic departments.
The campus connects to the Swamp Rabbit Trail, a 22-mile (35-kilometer) paved cycling and walking path that links Travelers Rest to downtown Greenville. Visitors can use the trail on foot or by bicycle to explore the grounds and surrounding area.
The campus operates a solar panel installation for power generation and maintains a small vegetable and herb plot. Both projects serve research purposes and demonstrate sustainable land management.
