The Commonwealth Club, Private social clubhouse in downtown Richmond, United States.
The Commonwealth Club is a private clubhouse featuring red brick walls, brownstone trim, and terra cotta details on West Franklin Street. The building sits on an elevated site above street level and offers event spaces and dining facilities for its members.
The clubhouse was founded in 1890 and designed by New York architects Carrère and Hastings. The project blended Renaissance Revival and Mediterranean Revival styles during a period of significant urban growth in Richmond.
The Richmond German Christmas Dance, Virginia's oldest debutante ball, takes place here and carries on a long-standing tradition. The event draws families each year to mark an important social milestone in the community.
The site sits above street level, so a short climb is needed to reach the entrance area. The downtown location is easy to walk to and can be spotted from the surrounding streets.
The facade blends Colonial Revival and Richardsonian Romanesque elements in an unusual way. This style combination makes the building distinctly different from others in Richmond's architectural landscape.
