USS Scorpion, Lost submarine in the Atlantic Ocean
The USS Scorpion (SSN-589) was a Skipjack-class nuclear submarine operated by the United States Navy. The vessel measured roughly 77 meters in length and served on reconnaissance missions during the Cold War.
The submarine vanished in May 1968 under mysterious circumstances while returning home from a patrol mission. The vessel took 129 crew members to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.
The loss of the Scorpion has been the subject of numerous books and articles.
The wreckage rests about 400 nautical miles southwest of the Azores on the seafloor. The site is not accessible to ordinary visitors and can only be explored through specialized deep-sea expeditions.
The exact cause of its sinking remains unresolved and continues to generate competing theories among experts. Some researchers point to a collision, while others suspect mechanical failure or deliberate action.
