Monte da Guia Special Area of Conservation

Monte da Guia features a double caldera formation with native vegetation, offering views of Porto Pim Bay and the Atlantic Ocean from its elevated position.

The area received protected status on February 5, 1998, under European Union directives to safeguard the natural habitats and species within its boundaries.

The reserve contains the Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Guia from 1666 and a former whaling factory now transformed into the Observatório do Mar dos Açores.

Visitors can access the reserve through an asphalted road past the fortress or take a hiking trail leading to the crater rim for nature observation.

The site includes a private breeding station at Porto Pim Aquarium that supplies local fish species to aquariums worldwide and rehabilitates injured sea turtles.
