Rowan University, Public research university in Glassboro, New Jersey.
Rowan University is a public research institution located in Glassboro, New Jersey. The campus system spreads across three sites and offers degree programs from undergraduate through doctoral level in fields ranging from engineering and medicine to communication and natural sciences.
The institution opened in 1923 as Glassboro Normal School to train teachers during a period when schools faced a shortage of qualified staff. After decades as a teacher education college, it broadened its mission and adopted its current name in 1997 following a major gift from an industrialist.
The institution carries the name of Henry M. Rowan, whose gift of 100 million dollars for engineering programs marked one of the largest single donations to a public college at the time. Today the campus brings together students from across the state, mixing commuters and residents in a setting that balances academic focus with community ties.
The main campus sits in Glassboro, about 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Philadelphia, with additional locations in Camden and Stratford. Visitor services and information are available through the administration office, and most facilities open to guests during events or by appointment.
The campus historic mansion Hollybush hosted the 1967 summit between President Johnson and Soviet Premier Kosygin. The meeting took place in the building because it offered a neutral ground away from the political tensions in Washington and New York.
