Bde Maka Ska, Glacial lake in Minneapolis, United States
Bde Maka Ska is a glacial lake in Minneapolis covering roughly 400 acres with depths reaching about 85 feet. The water connects to neighboring lakes through channels, forming an integrated waterway system.
From 1829 to 1839, a Dakota farming settlement called Ḣeyate Otuŋwe existed on the eastern shore. This community demonstrated significant Native American presence and use of the land.
The name honors Dakota language and heritage, recognizing the Indigenous people who originally lived here. Visitors can see this cultural recognition reflected throughout the area.
The shoreline has three swimming beaches and several fishing piers for water access. A walking trail of roughly 3 miles circles the lake, accessible throughout the year for strolling or jogging.
The lake holds tiger muskies and northern pike populations, with prime fishing spots near the channel connecting to Lake of the Isles. Anglers seek these larger fish species for sport fishing.
